Capital Gains Tax

Tax owed on the profit from selling an investment or asset for more than you paid.

Short-term capital gains (assets held one year or less) are taxed as ordinary income, while long-term capital gains (held more than one year) are taxed at generally lower rates set by current law. This distinction is a key reason many investors hold assets longer than a year before selling.
