Standard Deduction

A fixed dollar amount that reduces taxable income, available to taxpayers who don't itemize deductions.

The IRS adjusts the standard deduction amount annually for inflation, and it varies by filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household, etc.). Taxpayers choose whichever is larger, the standard deduction or the total of their itemized deductions, since only one can be used per return.

Not to be confused with: Itemized deductions, which are specific, individually listed expenses claimed instead of the standard deduction.
