Tax Bracket

A range of income taxed at a specific rate under a progressive tax system.

The U.S. federal income tax system is progressive, meaning different portions of income are taxed at increasing rates as income rises. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your entire income, which is why moving into a higher bracket doesn't reduce your overall take-home pay the way people sometimes assume.

Not to be confused with: Effective tax rate, which is the average rate paid across all income, always lower than the top marginal bracket.
