Gross Income

Total income earned before taxes and other deductions are subtracted.

Gross income includes wages, salaries, bonuses, and other earnings before any withholding for taxes, retirement contributions, or insurance premiums. It's the starting figure used to calculate taxable income and is often what's quoted in job offers, which is why it's usually higher than what actually lands in a paycheck.

Not to be confused with: Net income, which is what remains after deductions.
