Zero-Based Budgeting

A budgeting method where every dollar of income is assigned a specific purpose, leaving zero unallocated.

Rather than just tracking spending after the fact, zero-based budgeting requires planning in advance where every dollar will go, whether toward bills, savings, debt payoff, or discretionary spending, until income minus allocations equals zero. It requires more upfront effort than simpler methods but can surface spending patterns that looser budgets miss.
