Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

The minimum amount you must withdraw annually from certain retirement accounts starting at a set age.

RMDs apply to Traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar pre-tax accounts once the account holder reaches the age set by current law. The amount is calculated based on account balance and life expectancy tables published by the IRS. Roth IRAs are not subject to RMDs during the original owner's lifetime. Failing to take an RMD can result in a tax penalty.
