Employer Match

Money an employer contributes to your retirement account based on your own contributions, up to a set limit.

A common structure is matching 50% or 100% of employee contributions up to a percentage of salary, such as matching 100% of the first 3% contributed. Not contributing enough to receive the full match is often described as leaving free money on the table, since the match is essentially an immediate, guaranteed return not available anywhere else.
