Inflation

The rate at which the general price level of goods and services rises over time, reducing purchasing power.

Measured in the U.S. primarily through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), inflation means a fixed amount of money buys less over time. This is a key reason financial advisors generally recommend investing rather than only saving in cash for long-term goals, since cash sitting idle loses real value to inflation over years.
