Escrow

A neutral third-party account that holds funds during a real estate transaction or for ongoing property expenses.

During a home purchase, escrow holds the buyer's deposit and closing documents until all conditions are met. After closing, mortgage lenders often maintain an escrow account to collect a portion of property tax and homeowners insurance with each monthly payment, then pay those bills on the homeowner's behalf when due.
