Self-Employment Tax

A tax covering Social Security and Medicare contributions for self-employed individuals.

Because self-employed workers don't have an employer splitting these contributions, they pay both the employee and employer portions themselves, currently totaling 15.3% of net self-employment earnings (subject to income thresholds and caps set by current law). Half of the self-employment tax paid is typically deductible when calculating income tax.
