Asset Allocation

The mix of asset types, such as stocks, bonds, and cash, in an investment portfolio.

Asset allocation is typically the single biggest driver of a portfolio's long-term risk and return profile, more influential than which specific stocks or funds are chosen within each category. A common approach is to shift toward a more conservative allocation (more bonds, fewer stocks) as an investor gets closer to needing the money, such as approaching retirement.
